The Risk Management Department supports instruction and promotes a safe learning environment for staff and students. Our ultimate goal is to maintain safety and, as a result, minimize the financial impact of losses. Risk Management involves six key areas:
- Claims
Risk Management covers and adjusts claims that fall within the deductible, works with insurers who are responsible for coverage, and assists injured employees throughout the process of their Workers' Compensation claims.

Risk Management plays a key role in protecting the safety of students and staff through membership in the IRT.
- Insurance
Risk Management is responsible for purchasing auto, crime, liability, and property insurance. Aurora Public Schools is self-insured for workers' compensation and liability coverage. Our goal is to provide appropriate coverage at the best pricing available
- Safety
Risk Management works to prevent losses by reviewing injury reports, investigating accidents, providing safety training, developing and implementing policies and procedures, ensuring proper use of protective equipment, and inspecting sites. The Department also recommends replacement of playground equipment to ensure safe and appropriate play areas for APS students and provides many ergonomic evaluations for staff.

- Wellness
Risk Management actively promotes employee wellness and fitness by sponsoring fitness activities through health fairs and additional programming to meet the needs of employees.
